Description and Size

  • Moderately rounded upper shell (carapace)
  • Notched upper jaw
  • Single hinge on the lower shell (plastron)
  • Relatively long tail
  • Shell length: 12.5-27.4 cm (4.9-10.8 in)
  • Carapace color: brown, black, or grey
  • Plastron color: yellow with black blotches
  • Bright yellow chin and throat

Habitat

  • Marshes
  • Permanent ponds
  • Small streams
  • Sandy substrates

Diet

  • Omnivorous
  • Snails
  • Earthworms
  • Fish
  • Frogs

Life History

  • Diurnal
  • Active season: Late March – mid October
  • Breeding season: Early spring
  • Lays eggs
  • 3-24 eggs per female (Ruane, Dinkelacker, and Iverson, 2008)
